Phoenix Suns: Offseason and Draft Targets

No matter what happens in the draft, the Suns need to have a proven Point Guard facilitating the offense with Booker and Deandre Ayton next season. The need for a Point Guard in the Valley of the Sun is priority No. 1, 2, and 3 this offseason. Outside of Ja Morant, the next two great point guards are Coby White out of North Carolina and Darius Garland out of Vandy. Not sure how 5 games played in College outweighs the work Coby White put in at a blue blood school in North Carolina. 5 games are the number of games Darius Garland played his Freshman year at Vandy.

Coby White, PG, North Carolina- Player Comparison- Russel Westbrook

BetChicago.jpgCoby is more of an immediate impact player for the Suns while Darius Garland is more of a risk/reward. White started all 35 games as a freshman while Garland only played in the first 5 games before getting shut down for the season with a knee injury. They were both McDonald’s All-American’s and both have an incredibly high ceiling. Comparing him to Russell Westbrook is obviously a very far stretch. However, Coby White has next level speed and can get baseline to baseline faster than anyone in this draft. White needs to learn how to play a half-court style of play and slow things up. He’s also out to prove he’s a true point guard and not a combo guard or shooting guard. White wants to prove he’s a primary ball handler at the next level.

Darius Garland- PG- Vanderbilt- Player Comparison- Eric Gordon

Garland is more of an unknown to hoop fans only having minimal exposure in his one season in College. Garland scored 24 points his first game. Followed by 19 points and 33 points against very weak competition. Like White, Garland is crazy fast and shifty with the ball and can shoot lights out from deep. But, and it is a very big BUT! He’s turnover prone. He turned it over 15 times in 4 games (injured in the 5th) and only had 12 assists. Like I mentioned earlier, it is a high risk, high reward. That is something the Suns need to stay away from right now. They need a proven leader at Point. Whether it be in the draft or in free agency, they will have a Point Guard of the future on next years roster.

This franchise has become all too familiar with losing. Now, they’ve found their man in Monty Williams at the helm with a young nucleus to build around with Ayton and Booker all they need is a distributor out there. A player to handle the primary ball-handling duties so Booker can roam free and score off the ball. Deandre Ayton would see his scoring rise over 20 ppg with a true point guard. Which makes his 16 ppg as a rookie even more impressive, he did it without a true point guard. Coby White and Darius Garland are going to make great pros but if I’m in the Suns draft room I am taking Coby White all day. If they decide to address the position in free agency, there are a few names out there like Darren Collison, Chris Paul, and Mike Conley. TJ McConnell has to be a free agent worth going after. He wouldn’t come at a huge price tag and has a relationship with Monty Williams in Philly and the state of AZ, to Wildcats fans at least! That is if the Suns don’t try and package the pick up for a proven veteran in a trade. Decisions, decisions for new GM James Jones.
