Before Kyler Murray was a Heisman winning QB at Oklahoma and the No. 9 overall pick by the Oakland A’s in the MLB draft, he was in a QB competition in College Station, TX. Kyler was a 5 star QB with a huge decision to make between the Oregon Ducks or Texas A&M. Kyler chose his fathers Alma Mater, A&M. First off, if Chip Kelly were still in Oregon he probably would have been there. Then Head Coach Kevin Sumlin was one of the best recruiters in the country at the time and he managed to lock down two of the nation’s best QBs in back-to-back years. Murray would be joining the No. 1 Pro-Style QB in the 2014 high school class, Kyle Allen, who is born and raised in AZ where he’ll be making his season debut against former college teammate Kyler Murray. Oh yeah, Kyler Murray transferred because the fit didn’t feel right and he had lost the job to Kyle Allen.
As I said, Kyle Allen won round 1 when he took the starting QB job at A&M but he wasn’t very impressive. Any QB to come in immediately after Johnny Manziel was destined to fail. Although Manziel ended up partying his way out of the NFL forever, he put up ridiculous numbers in College Station, TX, home of the Aggies. Coming out of high school Kyle Allen was the number 1 pro-rated style QB in the nation and held offers from every major program. Kevin Sumlin was the hottest recruiter in the game and he came calling to Allen. Allen admitted that the Manziel lifestyle really hurt those that followed because they were allowed to get away with anything on and off the field. Each of these players respects the other one on the field but you can tell that neither really cared for each other off-the-field.
Moving ahead to the present. Kyle Allen is 1-0 in the NFL getting 1 start last season and threw for 260+ yards, 2 TDs, and no turnovers. For Allen, getting past college football was the challenge because he dealt with more adversity then he expected. Allen eventually went undrafted but has worked his way into a backup QB role and if he does well with Cam out he might find himself the starter. For Murray, he lit up the stat sheet the first two weeks even though the Cards are 0-1-1 throwing for over 300+ yards against the Lions and Ravens. On paper, this game might not look like the greatest but there are good storylines to watch. Oh yeah, Larry Fitzgerald needs about 10 catches to pass Tony Gonzalez for No. 2 all-time, leaving the GOAT, Jerry Rice, as the only player in front of Fitz.
