Heisman Watch: Defense Needs Some Love This Year With Chase Young

The Ohio State Buckeyes have had a very rich history of standout edge rushers. Chase Young might be the best of all that have come before him. He’s the second player in Ohio State history to have double-digit sacks in two separate seasons. Young has 13.5 sacks already this season and we still have 4 regular-season games and either a bowl game or two playoff games. He wreaks havoc in the passing game and the run game. Simply put, the dude is a monster and nightmare to deal with because he has a non-stop motor to go with his skill set. The most recent defensive players to receive Heisman Trophy consideration were Ndamakung Suh and Manti Teo and the last to win the award was cornerback Charles Woodson in 1997. Running Backs and Quarterbacks will get most of the attention but Chase Young is a special player and needs to win it this year.

Defensive line coach Larry Johnson is one of the games best at teaching technique and footwork. Young is able to use his hands so well to shed blockers and he has an ultra-quick first step. Offensive tackles can’t stay in front of him. When new head coach Ryan Day took the job retaining Johnson as the D-Line coach was a top priority. Larry Johnson puts out 1st rounders almost every year. We can go one step further and say he puts out top 10 picks every year. If you haven’t seen Chase Young live yet you are completely missing out on one of the best players in the country and will be a top 5 pick in next year’s draft. This past weekend was a showdown with the Wisconsin Badgers who usually roll out a pretty big and nasty offensive line. Young made the Badgers offensive line look like PeeWee football players. He had 4 sacks, 5 tackles for loss, and 2 forced fumbles. He’s No. 1 in the nation in sacks and No. 1 in the Big 10 in Tackles for Loss. Young is only a junior so technically he can stay one more year, but I don’t see that happening. He’ll be a top 5 pick in next seasons draft because as any good football mind will tell you, defense wins championships and Young is the lead dog on one of the Nation’s top defenses.
